About CAROLINE

Where Experience, Passion, and Exploration Meet.

Caroline was born in a small ski village in the Swiss Alps. She was introduced to climbing at a young age by her parents. Despite graduating with a law degree from university and speaking four languages, Caroline decided to pursue climbing professionally. She competed for three years in the ice climbing world cup and has worked as a sponsored athlete since 2000.

Some of her accomplishments include: first ascents of difficult ice and mixed routes in the Canadian Rockies, ascents of El Cap and Half Dome in Yosemite Valley, the North Face of the Eiger, Grands Jorasses and Matterhorn, the Freney Pillar on Mont Blanc, first ascents rock climbing in Ethiopia and first ice climbing ascents in Iceland, Canada, Norway and Antarctica.

Caroline has worked for a variety of guide services before working for herself at Into The Mountains.

Caroline was the lead guide for the Swiss Alpine Club’s first all female expedition team, where she led a successful expedition to Krighistan.

Caroline was the technical coordinator for Switzerland Tourism’s 100% women Peakchallenge in 2021 and 2022, where she coordinated for all the 4000m peaks in Switzerland to be climbed by all female team and to set a world record for the largest 100% women rope team to summit a 4000m peak.

She also loves to travel with clients to discover new places around the world, such as skiing in Lofoten, Norway, northern Iceland, the Dolomites and wherever people dream of going.

Outside of guiding, Caroline is as ever passionate about ice climbing and stays healthy with daily yoga practice, breathing and lots of cuddles with her little girl.

Currently, Caroline is an expert witness for mountain accidents in Switzerland and is the new President for the FEB – the group specialised in mountain accidents.

Message from our founder

The mountains have always been my greatest teachers. They’ve shaped my discipline, my intuition, and my belief in what’s possible for every person who steps into the wild. I was a client on this epic trip last week. Four days of amazing touring in Chamonix topped off with an incredible heliski from the top of Le Petit Combin. Caroline is a fabulous guide – knowledgeable of the local terrain, excellent at teaching ski touring and mountain safety, and always in tune with her clients. She brings such enthusiasm each day for being out in the mountains, that it is hard to remember she is working. Thanks for an unforgettable week in Chamonix.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the trip but I thought it turned out amazing. You certainly put us through the paces for our first backcountry trip on touring gear. I now have lots of skills to practice on. I hope you have an excellent spring and that the ice stays nice and hard.

“What image are you currently starting at on your computer wallpaper or screensaver? Do you find that you had a fun vacation, basked and reveled in the glory of it for about 1-2 months afterwards while letting all your friends know what peaks you bagged or ski descents you cruised and then, the photos are put away, the screensaver changed and the memories are filed away? This will not be the case if you go climbing with Caroline. Two years later and I still have the screensaver up and am trying to determine how exactly I can squeak in a trip to Europe this summer even though I am currently recovering from a fractured ankle. Caroline, it goes without saying, is a great climber. But that is not what makes the trip memorable. For me, climbing is about spending time in beautiful places, climbing aesthetic routes and having great company. And Caroline will not fail to deliver on any of these aspects. She can find a spectacular route full of orange granite with no other climbers on it and then provide great dinner conversation over a cinnamon curry in the hut. She can cuss out other guides who are trying to poach your ice climb, then smooth things over, then go hang out and eat ice cream. So if you want to go on a trip, you can climb with anyone, but if you want to have an experience with memories that will last a lifetime, go climbing with Caroline.” – Michele Gilbert
